Annual dishwasher maintenance is that task almost nobody does and that, nevertheless, makes the difference between an appliance that lasts 12 years and another that starts acting up at four. I’m not talking about cleaning the filter every week, that’s the basics. I’m talking about a deep check-up done once a year that very few people have on their calendar. If you have a dishwasher at home, this matters to you more than you think.
Why annual dishwasher maintenance isn’t a whim
Limescale is the silent enemy. In areas with hard water, a dishwasher can accumulate several millimeters of scale inside the pump and in the water lines in barely a year. That reduces the sprayer pressure, leaves dishes with residue and strains the motor. Annual dishwasher maintenance tackles exactly that problem before it becomes irreversible.
There’s another factor almost nobody mentions: leaks. An inlet hose that cracks can release water behind the cabinet for months without you noticing. By the time you discover it, your kitchen cabinet is already swollen and you have a damp problem that costs more than a new dishwasher. Checking hoses and connections once a year is the cheapest insurance policy you’re going to take out.
Step 1: inspection of hoses and connections
Before touching anything, shut off the water and the power. Then check the inlet hose, the drain hose and all the connections. Look for cracks, stiff areas, rust spots or dampness around the threads. If a hose is more than five years old, replace it even if it looks fine: the rubber degrades from the inside and you can’t see it.
This point is key in annual dishwasher maintenance because a leak doesn’t warn you. It makes no noise, doesn’t smell, doesn’t show an error on the panel. It just gets things wet. And when the water reaches the neighbor’s floor, it’s already too late.
Step 2: deep cleaning of accessible components
Remove the bottom filter, the spray arms and, if your model allows it, the inner chamber. Rinse everything with hot water and an old toothbrush for the sprayer holes. That’s where grease, food residue and limescale build up, and it’s the number one cause of a dishwasher not washing well.
For limescale, white vinegar or citric acid. An empty cycle with a glass of vinegar in the upper basket works wonders. If the scale is stuck on hard, use citric acid dissolved in hot water and let it act. Careful: don’t mix vinegar and bleach, that generates toxic gases.
The door gasket is also part of annual dishwasher maintenance. Wipe it with a damp cloth and check that it has no black mold or cuts. If the gasket is hard or cracked, the dishwasher loses steam and water, and drying gets worse.
Step 3: technical check of the pump and motor
Here comes the moment to call a technician. The circulation pump and the motor can’t be inspected without specific tools or electrical knowledge. A technician can measure consumption, check whether the pump makes abnormal noise, verify the heating system and check the electronics.
You don’t need to do this every year if the dishwasher works well, but every two or three years you do. If you notice it takes longer to heat up, makes a strange humming sound or leaves water at the bottom, don’t wait for the annual check-up: call sooner. Annual dishwasher maintenance includes this professional check because there are faults that can only be detected with a multimeter and experience.
Mistakes people make with dishwasher maintenance
- Using too much detergent: it creates foam that can damage the pump and leave residue. Less is more.
- Not cleaning the filter: if you don’t do it even once a month, annual dishwasher maintenance is useless.
- Ignoring the smell: a persistent musty smell indicates residue buildup in the drain or the gasket.
- Not checking the salt and rinse aid: if your model uses them, forgetting about them speeds up limescale.
How much it costs and how much it saves
An annual technical check-up can cost between 60 and 120 euros depending on the area and the type of dishwasher. A new hose costs less than 15 euros. A deep cleaning you do yourself in an hour. Compared to that, a new dishwasher with installation can exceed 500 euros.
Annual dishwasher maintenance isn’t an expense, it’s an investment. And I’m not just saying it: a well-maintained appliance consumes less energy because it doesn’t have to work twice as hard to compensate for limescale and residue.
My personal recommendation
Mark a fixed date on the calendar, for example the first weekend of September. That day you do the deep cleaning, check hoses and gaskets, and decide whether it’s time for a technician. If you’re handy, you can do the first two steps yourself. For the third, don’t risk it.
Annual dishwasher maintenance is one of those things that separate those who have appliances that last from those who change them every few years. There’s no magic, just consistency.
