ANDE bets on instant messaging

The National Electricity Administration of Paraguay has just announced a change that many users had been waiting for. From now on, WhatsApp will be an official channel for procedures related to the electricity service.

What’s striking is that it’s not an automated bot, but rather direct support with ANDE personnel. Several users on Twitter have already shared their first experiences, mentioning that they received responses in less than an hour for simple inquiries.

This move places ANDE on par with private companies that already used WhatsApp for customer service. Without a doubt, an important step forward in the modernization of public services.

The process is simple: users must send a message to ANDE’s official number (available on their website) stating the problem. According to initial reports, power outages are the main reason for inquiries.

Some important details:

  • You don’t need phone credit, just an internet connection
  • It’s recommended to send photos of the meter or the problem if possible
  • The fastest response time is between 7 AM and 7 PM

An interesting fact: in the first 48 hours of operation, ANDE received more than 3,000 messages, according to internal sources.

Claims to ANDE for billing also have a new channel

Many Paraguayans know how cumbersome it was to dispute an electricity bill. Now, all you have to do is send a photo of the bill and a brief explanation of the claim via WhatsApp.

Several users on forums comment that this method is more effective than the phone, where you sometimes had to wait up to 20 minutes to be attended to. That said, ANDE clarifies that complex claims can take up to 5 business days to resolve.

WhatsApp vs ANDE physical offices: Which is more convenient?

The advantages of the new system are obvious:

  • No need to travel
  • Queues are avoided
  • There’s a written record of the procedure

But there are cases where it will still be better to go to a branch, such as when you need to sign documents or submit physical paperwork. ANDE recommends using WhatsApp for quick inquiries and simple problems.

The challenge of coverage in rural areas ANDE

Not everything is rosy. In areas with poor internet connection, the WhatsApp service might not be the best option. ANDE acknowledges this limitation and keeps its other traditional channels operational.

Some legislators have already suggested that the company should consider implementing SMS as an alternative for these areas. For now, the institution is evaluating the results of this first stage before making further adjustments.

What can we expect in the future from ANDE?

If this initiative is successful, we could see other Paraguayan public institutions follow the same path. In fact, there are already rumors that ESSAP (the water company) is testing a similar system.

What’s certain is that ANDE has taken an important step toward digitalization. Only time will tell if this solution meets all users’ expectations. For now, the first impressions seem positive.
