If you enjoy climbing or via ferratas, you’ve surely heard of the Via Ferrata energy absorber. But do you really know what it is and why it’s so important? Well, imagine this: you’re in the middle of a route, the cable vibrates from a sudden fall and, all of a sudden, your harness absorbs the entire impact! Without a Via Ferrata load absorber, that impact could be brutal.
A braking absorber for via ferratas is a system that reduces the force of impact in the event of a fall. Basically, it acts as a “shock absorber” that prevents your body from suffering a dangerous jolt. - Make sure it’s EN 958 (if not, don’t even look at it).
- Check the maximum weight (some only work up to 90 kg).
- Prefer double-webbing ones (more resistance).
- Check that it’s comfortable to carry on the harness.
