I opened it and it told me “you know how this goes, but not today.” The first thing was to make sure mobile data was actually turned on, not on standby for some reason. Many times the problem starts there, with the most basic thing.
After that, the most common thing is that the failure comes from the ” it simply doesn’t appear or you can’t activate it, that’s the main reason. You have to call them. There’s no shortcut.
Let’s assume the option is there and you activate it. The key, the one many people skip, is to stay on that same screen and in the foreground.
Now, the ways it appears on the iPhone screen and that’s it. The password must use only they won’t be able to join.
- Via USB: for a Mac, it’s just connecting it with the cable and that’s it. Sometimes on Windows you need to have iTunes updated. It’s the most stable connection and it also charges the phone.
- Via Bluetooth: useful for saving some it may drop a bit, but at least it connects.
- Resetting network settings. This is the last resort before calling support. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Be careful, this erases all your saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth configurations, you’ll have to reconnect to everything from scratch. But if something at the software level of the network system is corrupted, this cleans it up.
Things that can ruin the experience even if the connection is established:
- The battery drains in two hours. Sharing Internet, especially via Wi-Fi, consumes a lot of battery. If you can, connect the iPhone to a charger.
- It disconnects on its own. If the iPhone locks or goes to sleep, it sometimes cuts the connection. Keep the screen on (increase the auto-lock time) while using it as a hotspot.
- The speed is terrible. It could be the coverage where you are (check the bars), your carrier limiting the tethering speed (ask them), or low power mode being enabled. Turn it off.
- Some things don’t work. You won’t be able to back up to iCloud or upload photos to iCloud Photos from the iPhone itself while you have devices connected to its hotspot. It’s a system limitation.
