The tap that is Suno AI is already open, but not everyone drinks the same. The word “free” here is the biggest commercial hook they’ve been able to put in the fine print of the internet. You sign up, they give you 50 daily credits (that’s about 10 songs a day) and you think it’s paradise. And it is, until you hit the wall of what it really means to create something of your own.
⚖️ What they really give you “for free”
What Suno calls “free” is a very well-designed launchpad. It works like this:
- Daily limit: 50 credits. Each short song (2 minutes) is 5 credits. A couple of ideas in the morning and you’re already dry. If you haven’t done anything, they renew at 00:00 UTC, not when you wake up.
- Outdated quality: You use the v3.5 model. According to them, with more robotic voices and less expression. The good models (v4.5+) are behind the paywall.
- No rights: This is the one that hurts. What you create on the free plan is not commercially yours. Suno keeps it. You can’t monetize it, sell it, or even claim with ownership that the song is yours.
- Shared queue: Your songs are generated in the same line as everyone else’s. With a paid plan they put you in the fast queue.
- Public profile by default: Your username, your songs, everything is visible to anyone who passes by unless you’re a paid user.
It’s a classic “freemium” model: they give you the drug so you get hooked on the possibility, but the real dose costs money.

Beyond the price is the fine print of the industry:
- What is it trained on? They don’t say it openly, but the record industry is suing them. The accusation is clear: they trained their models on copyrighted music from artists like Michael Jackson or ABBA without permission. Using Suno, therefore, is not a neutral act. It’s feeding a business model that is in the eye of the legal hurricane for appropriating the work of other musicians.
- It’s not a controlled environment. Although it has filters, songs with hate messages or disinformation using coded language have slipped through. It’s a public and open space.
- Your data is theirs. Everything you generate is stored on their servers. Deleting it requires a manual request.
🤔 So, what do I do?
The question isn’t whether it’s free, but what you want to do with it.
- If it’s just to try it out, laugh for a while, or generate a song for a meme, the free plan is more than enough. It’s an incredible toy.
- If you’re a content creator (YouTube videos, podcasts, social media) and you need royalty-free background music, the Pro Plan is probably your best option. You have volume and what you create is legally usable.
- If you’re a musician, producer, or someone seriously looking to integrate AI into their workflow, you need at least the Pro Plan for access to Suno Studio and editing control. Premier is for those who generate at an industrial scale.
The truth nobody tells you isn’t the price. It’s that by using Suno, you participate in a massive experiment that redefines what creating music is and who benefits from it. The “free” plan is just the entry door.
