This whole changing the clocks thing is like your grandma’s: nobody really knows why the hell we’re still doing it, but there it is. The ;
The nice story they tell us started with an Englishman, William Willett. The guy was out riding his horse in 1907 and was stunned to see that the shutters on the houses were still down with the was his motto, although at first people thought he was crazy. Nobody paid him any attention until World War I came along and the Germans, who are very practical about these things, implemented it to use less coal . What an irony, right? We copied the enemy on this one.
What pisses me off the most is the hypocrisy. They say we’re saving, but I’ve seen the electricity bills and they don’t go down by a single damn euro. In fact, experts have already dropped the bomb: energy savings from the time change barely reaches 1% in households. Or in other words, you save six bucks a year . Yes, you heard that right. Six euros. With what routines cost us, and listen up: if it’s hard on us, it messes them up three times as much.
The reality is that only the bar and terrace owners love this. More light at night means more drinks ordered. The benefits of the summer time change for tourism and leisure are enormous, but at the cost of the rest of us getting up like headless chickens . It’s a business, not an ecological necessity.
So now you know: when you move the clock forward this Sunday and lose an hour of sleep, remember Willett and his horse ride. What started as an idea to not waste sunlight has become an annual disruption. And we’ll keep doing it because politicians are afraid to choose between sticking with winter time (the healthy one) or summer time (the commercial one). They’d rather not take a stance.
