The question is no longer where to download games without paying, but which free model fits the way you play. There are four entry doors and each one has its traps.
The four real paths to free access on PC
1. Free-to-play with in-game monetization
Fortnite, Warframe, Path of Exile or Genshin Impact cost nothing at the door, but their design pushes you to buy cosmetics, battle passes or inventory space. Here it’s worth distinguishing between pay-to-look (cosmetics only) and pay-to-progress (boosters, locked characters). A typical case you only notice while playing: in several free-to-play games the inventory limit appears around hour 15-20, right when you’ve already invested enough time that you don’t want to quit.
2. Periodic store giveaways
The Epic Games Store gives away titles every week and you keep them as long as you claim them on time. GOG and Amazon Prime Gaming (with a prior subscription) also hand out keys. The practical limitation: the gifted game stays in your library, but if the store closes or revokes the license, you can lose access. It’s not a purchase, it’s a conditional license.
3. Permanent quality freebies («premium freeware»)
There are complete games, with no catch, released by their studios: Doki Doki Literature Club, Cave Story, TrackMania Nations or the classic OpenTTD. They usually have active communities and mods. The catch: there’s no official support or guaranteed long-term updates.
4. Demos, betas and free weekends
Steam lets you try paid games for 48-72 hours or with permanent demos. It’s useful for deciding, not for staying. A common mistake: installing a free weekend game and believing it will keep working on Monday; Steam blocks access automatically.
Practical comparison: when to choose each option
- You want to play with friends without spending: free-to-play with a large player base (Fortnite, Rocket League, Apex Legends). Risk: queues and servers that age.
- You’re looking for narrative without paying: Epic giveaways and freeware. Risk: an uneven catalog.
- You want to try before buying: demos and free weekends on Steam.
- You’d rather not depend on a store: freeware downloadable from community repositories (itch.io, GitHub). Risk: less quality filtering.
Details almost nobody mentions
The launcher weighs on you. Several free-to-play games install their own clients that consume RAM and start with the system; on modest machines that already eats into performance before you even begin. You also have to check the real requirements: a «free» game can demand 80 GB of disk space and a mid-range GPU, something many recommendation lists omit.
As for the other names that come up in searches: FIFA Street has no official free version on PC; the ports circulating are console emulations with malware risk. PS6 and Ken Kutaragi belong to the realm of rumors and statements, with no relation to the free PC catalog. The Nintendo eShop is a closed store for its consoles, not for computers, and Brawl Stars is mobile with unofficial emulators that violate its terms. Release dates for free-to-play games are announced in the stores themselves; be wary of calendars from aggregator sites with no link to the official source.
An honest recommendation
There is no universal «best» option. If your priority is zero spending and zero surprises, combine Epic’s weekly giveaways with two or three freeware titles from your favorite genre. If performance and stability matter to you, check requirements and avoid piling up launchers. And if a free game asks for payment details to «unlock the full mode,» it probably isn’t free: it’s a demo in disguise.
According to the stores’ own official documentation, the terms of giveaways and free-to-play games change without prior notice; it’s worth checking the game’s page before installing. None of these paths guarantees permanent access.
