Choosing a mattress to sleep well isn’t a whim: it’s the difference between waking up with back pain or feeling like new. And no, anything that’s on sale at the hypermarket won’t do. I’ve tried a few and I’ve read enough to know that most people get it wrong when buying. So let’s get straight to what really matters.
Mattress firmness: sleeping on your side isn’t the same as on your stomach
Firmness is the factor you notice most the next day. If you sleep on your side, you need a mattress to sleep on that gives at the shoulders and hips so your spine stays straight. A mattress that’s too hard will put pressure on those areas and you’ll get up with tingling. Those who sleep on their back or stomach appreciate firmer support more, especially in the lower back area.
There’s no one-size-fits-all here. I’ve seen people buy an extra-firm mattress because «it’s better for your back» and then not be able to sleep on their side. Classic mistake. Always try it lying down in your usual position, not sitting on the edge like many do in the store.
Materials: memory foam, springs or hybrids
The material defines the feel and the durability. Memory foam mattresses (viscoelastic) adapt to the body and reduce motion transfer, something key if you sleep as a couple. That said, they get hotter and take a while to recover their shape.
Pocket spring ones offer more bounce and ventilation. They’re good if you like a cool bed with more response when you move. Hybrids combine both things and tend to be the most balanced option if you don’t want to complicate things.
A detail almost nobody looks at: foam density. Below 25 kg/m³ in the support layers, the mattress will sag within months. Don’t rely on thickness alone.
Size and space: measure before buying
The ideal size depends on your height and on whether you sleep alone or with someone. For two people, less than 150 cm wide is torture. And watch out for the room space: a 180 cm mattress in a small room leaves you no place to get dressed.
Before deciding, measure the door, the hallway and the stairwell gap. I’ve seen more than one mattress returned because it wouldn’t fit through the landing. It sounds absurd, but it happens every week.
Try before buying: use the trial period
Many online stores offer 100 nights of trial. It’s the best way to know if a mattress to sleep on suits you. Don’t trust the 5 minutes lying down in the store: your body needs several nights to get used to it.
If you buy online, check the conditions carefully: some charge for collecting the returned mattress. And keep the original packaging until you’re sure.
Mistakes I see over and over again
- Buying by price without looking at density or warranty. A cheap mattress that sags within a year turns out expensive.
- Ignoring your weight. The more you weigh, the more density and firmness you need.
- Not changing your mattress in time. After 8-10 years, even if it looks fine, it loses support.
- Forgetting the base. A good mattress on an old, sagging bed frame won’t perform the same.
And what about the warranty and returns?
A real warranty covers sagging greater than 2-3 cm, not just manufacturing defects. Read it before buying. If the seller doesn’t show it to you clearly, be suspicious.
Returns are another hot point. Ask if it includes free collection and how many days it takes to get your money back. Without that, the trial period is an empty promise.
My direct recommendation
If you sleep as a couple and are looking for balance, a medium-firmness hybrid with pocket springs and a quality memory foam layer is the safest bet. If you sleep alone and have back problems, look at a high-density memory foam mattress adapted to your position.
And don’t get obsessed with the brand. There are mattresses from little-known brands that beat the typical TV ads. Compare specifications, not logos.
In the end, the best mattress to sleep on is the one that lets you get up without pain and without tossing and turning. Try, measure, check warranties and don’t get carried away by the lowest price. Your back will thank you for years.
