Movilnet: How to Change Your Contract Step by Step

Post actualizado el día octubre 24, 2026 by DeiviSanzPlay

What «changing contract» really means at Movilnet

At Movilnet, as with most Venezuelan carriers, there is no «contract» in the style of a fiber plan with a commitment period and penalty. What people call changing contract usually refers to three different things: changing plans (postpaid to prepaid or vice versa), migrating your prepaid line to a controlled plan, or updating the line holder’s details. Confusing these three procedures is the first mistake anyone makes, because each one is handled through a different channel.

According to the company’s official documentation, changing plans between modalities is handled mainly through the Mi Movilnet app and at customer service points; the holder’s details, on the other hand, require an in-person visit or phone support with identity verification.

Before you start: three checks that save you trips

1. Your line must be up to date

If you have pending postpaid bills, the system blocks migration to another plan until you settle the balance. This is common with corporate lines or with plans that went unpaid for months.

2. Verify the line type with the USSD code

Dial *1# or check in the app to confirm whether you are on prepaid, control, or postpaid. Many people believe they have postpaid when they actually have a controlled plan with a monthly top-up, and they request a change that doesn’t apply to them.

3. Have the holder’s ID at hand

Changing ownership (putting the line in someone else’s name) cannot be done from the app. You need the ID of both parties and, in many cases, to visit an office. If you bought the number from a third party, this is the step that takes the most time.

Changing plans from the Mi Movilnet app

The basic procedure, according to the carrier’s public information, is as follows:

  1. Log in to Mi Movilnet with your number and password.
  2. Go to your plan or line section.
  3. Look for the plan change or migration option.
  4. Select the destination plan and confirm.
  5. You will receive a confirmation SMS; the change usually takes effect in the next billing cycle.

A practical detail almost no one mentions: if you switch from prepaid to postpaid mid-month, the top-up balance you have left is not always transferred as credit. In practice, many users lose that remainder because the system uses it as a partial payment. It is best to use up the balance before migrating or to ask support whether it can be kept.

When the change doesn’t work: real limitations

Not everything can be resolved digitally. These situations require in-person or phone assistance:

  • Lines with debt: the system rejects the request without clearly explaining why. Check your account status before trying.
  • Change of ownership: not available through self-service.
  • Numbers reported or with blocks: require manual validation.
  • Corporate plans: only the account manager can modify them.

A typical case: someone tries to move a prepaid line to postpaid from the app and gets a generic error. Almost always the problem is that the number has a previous incomplete request, or that the registered ID does not match the current user’s. At that point, insisting from the app is useless; you have to call support and ask them to review the status of the request.

Tips for beginners

Make the change at the start of the billing cycle, not at the end of the month: you avoid confusing prorated charges. Keep the SMS or the case number they give you, because it is your only proof if the plan is not applied. And if the change involves going from postpaid to prepaid, confirm beforehand whether there are pending installments on the device or the plan, since some promotions require a commitment period and may generate a final charge.

The carrier does not guarantee that the change is immediate: in most cases it is reflected in the next cycle. Plan ahead if you depend on data for work.
