You open Gmail, refresh, and nothing new shows up. Hours pass. Still nothing. If you’re not receiving emails in Gmail, it’s probably not Google’s fault — it’s something on your end, and you can fix it in minutes. I’ve been through this, and I’ll tell you exactly what to check, in order, without the fluff.
First: Is It Gmail or Your Sender?
Before you blame Gmail, confirm the email was actually sent to you. Ask the person to resend and check their «Sent» folder. If they used a typo in your address, no setting on Earth will make it appear.
Also, run a quick test: send an email from a different account (a work address, a friend’s phone) to your Gmail. If that one lands, the problem is specific to the sender. If nothing lands, it’s your Gmail account.
Check the Spam Folder (and the «All Mail» Tab)
The most common reason for not receiving emails in Gmail is that they were silently filtered into Spam. Gmail’s spam filter is aggressive, and legitimate emails from new contacts, newsletters, or services often end up there.
Open the Spam folder in the left sidebar. If you find the missing email, click «Not spam» to move it to your inbox. Then create a filter so future emails from that sender skip the spam folder entirely.
Don’t forget the «All Mail» tab. Some emails are archived automatically by Gmail’s inbox tabs (Promotions, Social, Updates). If you only look at «Primary,» you’ll miss them. Click «All Mail» and search for the sender’s address.
Filters, Forwarding, and Blocked Addresses
Gmail filters can silently delete or reroute your incoming mail. Go to Settings (the gear icon) > «See all settings» > «Filters and Blocked Addresses.» Look for any filter that says «Delete it» or «Skip the Inbox.» Those are the usual suspects when you’re not receiving emails in Gmail.
Also check the «Forwarding and POP/IMAP» tab. If forwarding is enabled to an old address you no longer use, your emails are going there instead of your inbox. Disable it.
And scroll down to the blocked addresses list. If someone you need to hear from is blocked, their emails never reach you. Unblock them.
Is Your Gmail Storage Full?
Here’s a nasty one: if your Google account hits its 15 GB free storage limit (shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos), you stop receiving emails in Gmail. The sender gets a bounce message; you get silence.
Check your storage at one.google.com/storage. If you’re at 100%, delete large attachments, empty the Trash and Spam folders, and clear out Google Drive files you don’t need. That usually unlocks incoming mail immediately.
The POP/IMAP Setting That Steals Your Emails
If you set up Gmail on a desktop client like Outlook or Thunderbird using POP, that client may be downloading and deleting emails from the server. So when you log into Gmail on the web, the inbox looks empty.
In Gmail settings, under «Forwarding and POP/IMAP,» check the POP download status. If it’s set to «Delete Gmail’s copy,» switch it to «Keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox» or «Archive Gmail’s copy.» That alone solves the issue for a lot of people who think they’re not receiving emails in Gmail.
Gmail Account Verification and Security Locks
Sometimes Google temporarily blocks incoming mail until you verify your identity. This happens after suspicious login attempts or if Google flags your account. You’ll usually see a red warning banner at the top of Gmail.
Follow the verification steps — confirm your phone number or recovery email. Until you do, emails may be held or rejected. This is rare, but it happens, especially on accounts that haven’t been used in months.
Browser and App Glitches
If emails are arriving on your phone but not on your desktop browser, it’s a caching or sync problem, not a delivery problem. Log out of Gmail, clear your browser cache, and log back in.
On mobile, go to Settings > Apps > Gmail > Storage and clear the cache. Then force a sync by pulling down on the inbox. Nine times out of ten, the «missing» emails appear.
What If Nothing Works?
If you’ve checked spam, filters, storage, POP/IMAP, and verification, and you’re still not receiving emails in Gmail, then it’s time to contact Google support. Use the official Help Center (support.google.com/mail) and describe exactly what you’ve tried. Don’t just say «I don’t get emails» — list the steps you’ve done. It speeds things up massively.
One more thing: check if the sender is getting a bounce message. If they are, forward that error to Google support. It tells them exactly which server rejected the mail, and that’s gold for diagnosis.
Quick Checklist to Fix Gmail Not Receiving Emails
- Confirm the sender used the right address.
- Check Spam and All Mail folders.
- Review filters and blocked addresses.
- Turn off unwanted forwarding.
- Free up Google storage if it’s full.
- Fix POP settings so emails stay on the server.
- Complete any account verification Google asks for.
- Clear browser cache or mobile app cache.
- Contact Google support with details if all else fails.
Most of the time, the fix is in the first three steps. Gmail isn’t broken — it’s just doing what you told it to do, even if you don’t remember telling it. Go through the list, and you’ll be back to receiving emails in Gmail in under ten minutes.
