Mark it in red on your calendar: on the night of Saturday March 28 to Sunday March 29, 2026, clocks move forward one hour. At 2:00 a.m. it will suddenly be 3:00 a.m. If you work on Sundays or have a flight that morning, plan ahead, because the March 2026 time change is not a myth and it arrives whether you like it or not.
Those of us who have been hearing for years that «this is the last time change» already have our eyebrows raised. The Ministry has again asked Brussels to eliminate the seasonal shift, but the European Union has been dragging its feet since 2018 and there is no binding decision. The BOE calendar is published year by year, and as long as Brussels doesn’t move, Spain keeps switching to daylight saving time.
Why the March 2026 time change still exists
The energy-saving argument is dead. With LED bulbs, the savings from daylight saving time are around 6 euros per person per year, according to the latest estimates. A coffee and a half. What really keeps the system alive is tourism, hospitality and leisure: longer afternoons mean more terraces, more shopping, more spending on the street.
The strange thing is that the European Commission proposed eliminating the time change back in 2018 after a public consultation in which 84% of European citizens voted to end it. The European Parliament approved it in 2019, but the Council never closed the deal because countries can’t agree on which time to keep permanently.
Spaniards want to stop changing the clock, but nobody agrees on how
According to the CIS, 68% of Spaniards want to get rid of the time change. The problem comes next: which schedule do we keep? The majority prefers summer time forever, because they like having light in the afternoon. Sleep experts, though, warn that this is a biological mistake. Chronobiologists point out that winter time (the one that matches the sun’s position) is the one that fits our circadian rhythm best.
If we chose winter time permanently, in winter it would get dark around 5:00 p.m. and in summer around 8:30 p.m. Politically that is hard to sell. If we kept summer time, in Galicia the sun would rise after 9:00 a.m. in December. So nobody moves and we keep switching twice a year.
Franco, Germany and the real origin of Spain’s time zone
The time change became widespread during the oil crisis of the 1970s, but Spain carries an extra burden. In 1940, Franco decided that Spain should align with Nazi Germany and moved the country from Greenwich Mean Time to Central European Time. That is why in Galicia it gets dark so late compared to Portugal, which is on the same longitude but on a different time zone.
Geographically, Spain should be on the same time as the United Kingdom and Portugal. Every time we talk about the time change in Spain, this historical anomaly comes back to the table. It’s the elephant in the room that nobody in Brussels or Madrid wants to address head-on.
How to survive the March 2026 time change without wrecking your week
- Go to bed 20 to 30 minutes earlier the three nights before March 29. Your body adapts better to a gradual shift.
- Get sunlight first thing in the morning on Sunday. Natural light is the strongest signal to reset your biological clock.
- Avoid long naps on Sunday afternoon. If you sleep two hours, you’ll be awake until 2:00 a.m. on Monday.
- Don’t overload Monday with meetings or intense tasks. The post-time-change Monday has more traffic accidents and more workplace errors, according to various studies.
- Keep caffeine before 4:00 p.m. and skip heavy dinners for a couple of days.
Children and elderly people are the ones who suffer most from the time change in March 2026. Kids can take up to a week to adjust, and people with sleep disorders feel the effect longer. The economic savings are nonsense, but the health impact is real.
What happens if the European Union finally kills the time change
Nothing is confirmed, but if Brussels ever closes the deal, Spain would have to choose between summer time and winter time forever. The most likely scenario, according to what has been leaked in recent years, is that each country keeps the time it had in October 2021. Spain would stay on winter time, which is the one chronobiologists defend.
Until that happens, the time change in March 2026 is a fact. On Sunday March 29, at 2:00 a.m., you lose an hour of sleep. Not the end of the world, but annoying enough to ruin Monday. Set your alarm, check your devices and get ready because summer time is coming whether you like it or not.
