When you connect a USB drive and Windows 10 doesn’t detect it, the problem is almost never the device itself: in most cases it lies in how the system assigns the drive letter, in the USB controller, or in a file format the computer can’t read. Before writing off the USB drive, it’s worth going through a diagnostic sequence that runs from the simplest to the most technical. That is the one detailed below.
Step 1: Confirm that the failure is not physical
Try the USB drive in another port and, if you can, on another computer. A detail that is often overlooked: in desktop towers, the front ports receive less power than the rear ones, and a USB drive that draws more power than usual may not show up in them. Always use a rear port connected directly to the motherboard, not a hub.
If the device shows up on another computer but not on yours, the problem is software-related. If it doesn’t show up on any of them, the diagnosis changes: the memory may be in a failure state and no configuration will fix it.
Step 2: Check Disk Management
This is the point where most cases are resolved. Press Win + X and choose Disk Management. Three different situations occur here:
The drive appears without an assigned letter
Windows sees the USB drive but doesn’t give it an identifier, so File Explorer doesn’t show it. Right-click on the partition and select Change drive letter and paths. Assign a free letter (avoid A and B, which are reserved for floppy drives). The USB drive will appear within seconds.
It says «Unallocated» or «Unformatted»
The file system has become corrupted or the format is not compatible. Windows 10 reads FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS without problems, but it does not natively recognize Linux’s ext4 or macOS’s APFS. If the USB drive comes from a Mac or a Linux computer, this explains the failure. If the data matters, don’t format yet: use recovery tools on another computer before initializing anything.
The disk appears as «Removable» but without partitions
Here you need to create a new partition. Be careful: this step erases the contents. If the USB drive has irreplaceable data, stop.
Step 3: Reinstall the USB driver
Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Look for entries with a yellow exclamation mark. Right-click on each one and choose Uninstall device. Don’t check the box to delete the software if it’s offered. Restart the computer: Windows will reinstall the drivers from scratch on startup.
A common mistake: uninstalling only the device marked as failed and leaving the hubs untouched. It’s also worth checking the Human Interface Devices and Disk drives sections, where the USB drive sometimes appears with a different conflict.
Step 4: Disable selective port suspension
Windows 10 has a power-saving feature that turns off USB ports when it detects inactivity. Some USB drives and external disks don’t «wake up» correctly and stop responding. In the Properties of each USB Root Hub, under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box that allows the computer to turn off the device. It’s a cumulative setting: you have to do it on every hub that appears.
Step 5: Check the status with diskpart
Open the command prompt as administrator and type diskpart, then list disk. If the USB drive appears with a size but as «no media» or with 0 bytes, the controller of the USB drive itself is failing at the hardware level. This is a real limitation: no Windows setting recovers a device that the BIOS doesn’t recognize either.
What usually doesn’t work
The free «USB repairers» downloaded from generic sites rarely fix anything and sometimes include adware. Reinstalling all of Windows as a first resort doesn’t help either. And it’s worth knowing: on computers with very old motherboards or with first-generation USB 3.0 controllers, some modern USB drives simply don’t initialize due to firmware incompatibility; there the solution is to use a USB 2.0 port or a hub with an external power supply.
According to Microsoft’s official documentation, the recommended diagnostic order is always Disk Management before any driver reinstallation, because it resolves most issues without touching the system.
Practical rule before formatting
If the USB drive has data, first try reading it from a Linux computer using a Live USB. Many USB drives that Windows declares «unformatted» mount without a problem on Linux, and from there you can copy the contents before repairing the file system. Formatting should be the last step, never the first.
