Two weeks ago I was in one of those situations that makes your blood boil: I needed cash urgently, I had a balance on my Spin card, but at three different ATMs I couldn’t withdraw. Has that happened to you? After that day, I set out to properly research how this works, and here I share what I learned.

The truth is that not all ATMs are the same with the Spin. After trying several, I realized that BBVA ones are the most consistent. The one near my house has never failed me, although it only lets me take out up to $3,500 per transaction.
Santander ones also work, but with one caveat: at some smaller branches I’ve run into the dreaded “transaction not permitted” message. Curiously, the ATMs inside supermarkets (like the Walmart ones) tend to accept it better.
An important detail: even if the ATM belongs to a “big” bank, not all of them accept the Spin. The ones with Red or Cirrus logos are more likely to work. If you see one of those, it’s a good sign.
How to avoid those damn fees when withdrawing
Here’s the tip that would have saved me $85 pesos last month: only BBVA ATMs don’t charge a fee with Spin. The others, even if they belong to well-known banks, almost always hit you with between $25 and $40 pesos per withdrawal.
I learned this the hard way when I withdrew $1,000 from a Scotiabank ATM and they charged me $35. Now I always look for a BBVA, even if I have to walk a bit farther. If there’s no option, I prefer to take out all the money I need at once so I only pay one fee.
Another alternative is to use cashback at stores. In my case, when there are no ATMs nearby, I buy something cheap at Soriana and ask for $500 or $1,000 in cashback. It’s not ideal, but it works in emergencies.
What to do when the ATM won’t accept your card
Last Tuesday I spent 20 minutes fighting with a Banorte ATM that kept returning my card. Here’s what I learned:
First, if it fails at one ATM, don’t try more than twice. You’ll only get frustrated and risk your card getting stuck. Better to look for another one.
Second, ATMs inside banks (not the ones standing alone on the street) tend to be better configured to accept the Spin. I don’t know why, but that’s been my experience.
Lastly, if the ATM swallows your card (yes, it happened to me), immediately call the number that appears on the ATM. Spin takes a bit longer to respond, but in the end they always resolve it.
Alternatives when there are no ATMs that work
In a recent emergency, I discovered that transferring the money to another account (like my payroll account) and withdrawing from there can be a solution. It’s not instant, but within a few hours you have the money available.
Another option is to use apps like Mercado Pago or even ask a friend to send you the money by transfer and you give them the cash. It’s not optimal, but in a pinch it works.
What I always do now: carry another backup card. Since that time I was left without options, I never go out with just the Spin. A traditional debit card can save you from a lot of problems.
What nobody tells you about withdrawing with Spin
- On Friday afternoons many ATMs run out of cash. If you need money, better do it in the morning.
- Sometimes the problem isn’t the ATM, but that Spin has system outages. Before you get desperate, check on Twitter if others are reporting failures.
- Save Spin’s support number (55 4170 6799) on your phone. It doesn’t come on the card and when you need it, you really need it.
In the end, after all this journey, I learned that with the Spin you can withdraw cash, but you have to know how. Now I have three BBVA ATMs identified near my frequent spots, and I always carry a little extra cash just in case.
