Playdough —also known as Play-Doh— is easy to make at home and super fun for kids of all ages. In this tutorial I show you how to make your own homemade playdough, non-toxic and customizable with colors and scents.
I recommend checking out this interesting article: 💸 The ‘Free’ Apps That STEAL MONEY From You in 2025 (Without You Noticing).
This recipe is the classic method with cooking. Why cook it? Because it results in a much better texture than no-cook versions. If you’re looking for a recipe that kids can make entirely on their own, you can try a no-cook version.
⚠️ Warning: keep it away from dogs and other pets. Even though it smells like it’s edible, it has a high salt content that can cause problems if consumed in large amounts.
🧂 Ingredients
This recipe is so easy that once you try it, you won’t want to buy store-bought playdough again.
Basic proportions:
- 2 cups of flour
- 2 cups of hot water
- 1 cup of salt
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar (optional, improves elasticity)
- Food coloring (liquid, powder, or a mix of unsweetened drink powder)
- Essential oils or fragrances (optional)
🔥 Step 1: Mix and Cook
- Mix all the ingredients (except the food coloring and aromatic oils) in a pot.
- Cook over low heat, stirring constantly.
- The mixture will start to thicken and look like mashed potatoes.
- When the dough pulls away from the edges and is firm in the center, remove it from the heat and let it cool a bit.
Important note: if the playdough is sticky, it simply needs more cooking time. Keep stirring until it reaches a firm, dry texture.
✋ Step 2: Knead and Color
- Place the dough on a clean surface or a silicone mat.
- Knead vigorously until the texture is smooth and silky.
- Divide the dough into several portions to make different colors.
- Make a well in the center of each ball and add a few drops of food coloring.
- Fold the dough over itself and keep kneading until the color is fully incorporated.
Use gloves if you don’t want to stain your hands. Concentrated food coloring can stain, but once it’s well mixed in, it won’t leave marks on your skin.
If you use unsweetened drink mixes (like Kool-Aid), test with a small portion first: they aren’t as potent as food coloring.
🎨 Step 3: Play and Store
Now it’s time to play! Homemade playdough is safe and, even though it tastes salty, it isn’t a risk if a child tries it.
To preserve it:
- Store the playdough in an airtight container.
- If it dries out a little, knead it with a few drops of water.
- If it gets too moist (due to high humidity), you can gently reheat it to remove the excess water.
- Once it hardens completely, it’s best to make a new batch (luckily, it’s very easy!).
You can also bake it to make hard figures or ornaments. Then you can paint or decorate them however you like.
