Well yes, here we go again with the time change. If you’re one of those who still goes from Saturday the 28th to Sunday the 29th of March 2026, war.
Spain abolishes the time change in 2026, but don’t get too excited yet. We’ve been hearing for years that this is going to be the last one, and yes, the Government has asked Europe again, but the reality is that for now there is no firm decision. The official calendar published in the BOE goes up to this year, but Brussels has been since 2018 always feels good at first, but the body notices it. That feeling that when you leave work it’s still daylight and you can make the most of a world to concentrate. It’s like a small jet lag that for some of us lasts until Wednesday.
Energy savings no longer works as an excuse. In the past they said it was to use less electricity, but with today’s LED bulbs, the savings are ridiculous. There are studies that talk about a miserable 6 euros a year per person. I mean, what a coffee costs. What does move this is the real money: tourism, hospitality, leisure. . . With long afternoons, people go out more and spend more, and that’s what really matters.
68% of Spaniards want to get rid of the time change, but we can’t agree on which schedule to keep. According to the CIS, the majority would prefer summer time forever, because we like the light in the afternoon. The problem is that sleep experts say that’s a mistake. They assure that winter time is the one that best adapts to our biological clock, to the sun’s rhythm. But of course, that would mean that in winter it would get dark at five and in summer at eight thirty. . . and politically it’s complicated to sell.
The time change goes back a long way, and in Spain for a very specific reason. This business of changing the time became widespread during the oil crisis of the 70s, but ours has an extra point. In 1940, Franco decided that Spain should be like the fascist countries of Europe and put us in the same time zone as Germany. That’s why now in Galicia it gets dark so late. I mean, we live in a schedule that doesn’t correspond to us geographically, and that’s where the mess we have comes from.
