The original formula of Coca-Cola has been one of the most famous commercial secrets in the world. However, in 2011, the radio program “This American Life” claimed to have found a handwritten copy of the <a href="https://www.chusmeando.com/preguntas-y-respuestas/como-hacer-queso-fresco-en-casa-recipe-facil-y-casera/” title=”How to Make Fresh Cheese at Home, Easy and Homemade Recipe”>original recipe, published in an Atlanta newspaper in 1979. Although Coca-Cola never officially confirmed that this is the true recipe, it is believed to be very similar.

Here I show you the recipe according to that leak:
Original Coca-Cola Formula (according to the 1979 leak)
Base ingredients:
- <a href="https://www.chusmeando.com/preguntas-y-respuestas/de-que-color-seria-la-coca-cola-sin-colorante/” title=”What color would Coca-Cola be without coloring?”>Fluid extract of coca: 3 drams (1 dram ≈ 3.9 g)
- Citric acid: 3 oz
- Caffeine: 1 oz
- Sugar: 30 (amount not specified, probably pounds)
- Water: 2.5 gallons
- Lime juice: 1 oz
- Vanilla: 1 oz
- Caramel: enough to give color
The famous secret ingredient: “Merchandise 7X” (for every 5 gallons of syrup):
- Alcohol: 8 oz
- Orange oil: 20 drops
- Lemon oil: 30 drops
- Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
- Coriander oil (cilantro): 5 drops
- Neroli oil (orange blossom): 10 drops
- Cinnamon oil: 10 drops
These oils were mixed with the alcohol and left to emulsify, forming the secret aromatic base.
Note:
- The coca extract originally mentioned contained cocaine (in very low doses), which was eliminated starting in the early 20th century. Currently, Coca-Cola uses decocainized coca leaves processed by a DEA-authorized company in the U.S.
