When we hear internet DSL, many people automatically think of an outdated technology. And they’re not wrong: asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) was the standard for home connections for years. However, today it coexists with fiber optics and 5G, and in certain scenarios it’s still a valid option. Is it worth it in 2024? We’ll tell you straight.
Internet DSL uses the traditional telephone line to transmit data. Its main advantage is coverage: it reaches rural areas where fiber hasn’t landed yet. It’s also easy and inexpensive to install. But it has its downsides too: speed decreases the farther you are from the central office, and the most common connections hover between 10 and 30 Mbps download, far below the 300 Mbps or 1 Gbps of fiber.
If your only alternative is satellite or mobile with limited data, internet DSL can get you out of a jam. That said, before signing up, check the actual speed available at your home and compare prices. In many cases, providers offer fiber promotions at similar prices. Don’t just go with the flow: review your contract and ask yourself whether you really need more speed or whether DSL covers your basic needs like browsing, email, and low-definition videos. The decision is in your hands.
